Title: Fishing Continues Strong in Panama City and Panama Beach, Florida
This has been one of the best years ever for fishing. In 30 years of fishing there were several "firsts" on my boat. Example: One day we pulled up to a hole in the bay only seven feet deep and pulled out four legal grouper in about 30 minutes. The largest weighing about 12 pounds. Another day my single fisherman caught 17 black drum in the three to eight pound range mixing in five redfish, all over size. We have had 50 pound black tips jump after being hooked and some of the biggest flounder ever. Fishing has been great.
The fall spanish run has started with the August full moon and it is very easy to get a limit, which by the way, is now 15 each. Although trout have been scarce all summer we have been catching many over 20 inches during the last few weeks. I'm happy to say that we caught and released five trout weighing over six pounds this summer. Along with the trout, we are starting to find redfish getting ready for fall. Finding them in deep holes and drops.
Around the bay there are also a lot of sharks, jacks, ladyfish and the biggest bluefish I have ever seen in our area. One other fish of interest has been the mangrove snapper. There are more legal mangroves in the bay than I have ever seen and we are catching them everywhere.
All the reports point to a good fall fishing season both in the bay and offshore. There is a tremendous amount of live bait in the bay, I prefer to use the scaled sardines when I can get them. Using live baits such as these will be good up through the end of September. Bull minnows will catch the flounder in September, October and November.
